Admission Requirements

BIU shall consider only applications from candidates who satisfy the university’s general admission requirements. The general academic requirements for admission into University are as follows:

  1. A Somaliland Secondary School Certificate or any other secondary school certificate approved by the Ministry of Education
  2. The passing of an entrance examination with a minimum of  50%

Postgraduate Programs Admission Requirements

Each applicant for admission into the master’s programs shall:

  1. Be a holder of a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university;
  2. Have his/her degree in an area that qualifies him/her to join the program he/she is seeking to join;
  3. Each applicant to the Postgraduate diploma program shall be a holder of a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university

Admission Process

Any student who is interested in joining the BIU community is required to submit the following:

1. Complete Admissions Application

2. Final and certified Secondary School Certificate/Bachelor’s degree for postgraduate applicants

4. Four passport-size photographs

5. An application fee of $25/35 for postgraduate applicants

Applicants must submit the admission application and supporting documents at the Registrar Office by the admission deadline.

Validating Official Transcripts

The university will consider only valid and completed documents, and any transcript shall satisfy the following:

1. The transcript must be final.

2. The transcript must be official.

3. The transcript must be stamped and signed by an appropriate official

Transfer Admission

All applicants who have previously attended another university for a minimum of one semester are considered transfer applicants, and may apply for transfer admission to BIU. Transfer applicants may apply at the beginning of either the fall or spring semester and are eligible for undergraduate admission only. Transfer applicants must satisfy the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission into BIU as a transfer student: the applicant must

  1. complete an application form
  2. have earned a General Secondary School Certificate
  3. have completed a minimum of one semester with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00
  4. submit an official transcript from the previous institution he/she attended
  5. submit two recent passport-size photographs
  6. Pay an application fee of $25
  7. Submit application form to the registrar by the deadline

Transfer of Credit

Transfer credit may be considered only if the applicant is admitted as a transfer student and has completed one semester with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00. Grades earned in courses accepted for transfer will not be included in the grade point average to be maintained at BIU, but the credits will count toward the total number required for graduation. A maximum of 60 credit hours with a grade of “C” or higher may be considered for transfer credit evaluation.

Inter-University Transfer

An inter-faculty transfer will depend on the availability of space and facilities in the receiving faculty or department, and a transfer applicant must fulfill the criteria and grade levels that would normally be required of students for enrollment into the faculty concerned.

Re-Admission

Admission into BIU is competitive, and the academic qualifications of applicants, as well as the capacity of each faculty and department for the intended semester of admission, are taken into consideration. Applicants seeking re-admission must satisfy all BIU undergraduate admission requirements for the semester of intended admission and must submit all the appropriate application materials to the Admissions Department by the admission deadline.
